Founded by Stephen Marks in 1972, French Connection set out to create well-designed fashionable clothing which appealed to a broad market. Today, French Conection offers a fashion-forward range of clothes and accessories representing good value for money. Their womenswear collections take a quirky spin on design and include fashionable dresses, women's top, jackets, skirts, coats, trousers, womens jeans, shorts, knitwear, shoes, playsuits and beachwear.
Having established a strong core clothing business, French Connection more recently expanded its portfolio into new areas including women's toiletries, sunglasses, watches and shoes. Driven by change and innovation, the French Conection brand aims to balance new ideas with the basic promise of quality and affordability. The brand identity developed by Fench Connection is stylish and sexy.
The FCUK name was introduced alongside the French Connection logo in 1997. It originated from being the short form used to describe French Connection United Kingdom on faxes between their offices in the UK and Hong Kong (FCHK). A simple advertising campaign launched FCUK clothes onto the high-street in spring 97 and since then it has become interchangeable with French Conection as the brand name and identity.
They certainly exploited the controversy of the name at the beginning as well with an extremely popular range of women's (and mens) t-shirts with messages such as "fcuk fashion", "fcuk this", "Cool as fcuk", etc. There were also a number of more regionally specific messages, such as "fcuk in hull" and "no fcukin worries" (in Australia). Whether the name shocked or amused, it certainly made people take notice, underlining Frenc Connection's desire to be distinctive, original and accessible.
If you shop for womenswear in one of the womens clothes department of their high street stores across the globe you'll find a clean, minimalist shopping environment where the clothing takes centre stage, with large advertising graphics forming the backdrop for many of the store's fittings and fixtures.
